Mastering Image Weights in Midjourney: The Secret to Controlling Your Prompts
When prompting in Midjourney, you often find yourself in a tug-of-war with the AI. You type a beautifully descriptive prompt, but Midjourney completely ignores one crucial element while hyper-focusing on another.
If you want to stop guessing and start controlling exactly how much influence an image or a specific word has on your final generation, you need to master image weights and text weights.
Here is everything you need to know to bend Midjourney’s algorithm to your creative will. 1. What is Image Weighting (--iw)?
When you use an image as part of your prompt (an image prompt), Midjourney looks at that reference image for composition, style, and color. By default, Midjourney assigns a balanced importance to that image relative to your text prompt.
However, you can manually change this balance using the Image Weight parameter (--iw).
The Scale: In Midjourney v5 and v6, the --iw value ranges from 0.0 to 2.0.
The Default: If you don’t specify an image weight, Midjourney defaults it to 1.0.
How to use the --iw parameter
To adjust the image weight, simply add space, followed by --iw, space, and a number at the very end of your prompt:
[URL of your image] a futuristic astronaut walking on Mars --iw 0.5
Visual Impact of the Scale
Low Weight (--iw 0.1 to --iw 0.5): The reference image acts as a faint inspiration. Midjourney will heavily prioritize your text description, borrowing only subtle color palettes or minor structural cues from the image.
Balanced (--iw 1.0): The image and text share equal custody of the output.
High Weight (--iw 1.5 to --iw 2.0): The reference image dominates the generation. The final output will look very close to your original image’s composition and subject, using your text prompt merely to tweak the style, lighting, or minor details. 2. Text Weights: Controlling the Words (The :: Syntax)
Image weighting isn’t the only way to balance your prompts. Often, you need to tell Midjourney which words in your text prompt are the most important. You do this using multi-prompts separated by a double colon (::).
By adding a number immediately after the double colon, you assign a specific weight to that part of the prompt.
The Double Colon Breakdown
If you type hot dog, Midjourney looks for a picture of a sausage in a bun.
If you type hot:: dog, Midjourney splits the concepts evenly into “hot” and “dog”, likely rendering a puppy panting in the summer heat. You can take this further with explicit weights:
space ship::2 alien planet::1 — This tells Midjourney that the space ship is twice as important to the final image as the alien planet.
cyberpunk city::3 rainy street::0.5 — The city’s overall aesthetic is heavily prioritized, while the rainy street element is kept minor.
Negative Weights (The Ultimate Control)
You can also use negative weights to tell Midjourney what not to include, which is exactly how the --no parameter works behind the scenes.
vibrant forest portrait::2 red flowers::-0.5
This tells the AI to focus on the vibrant forest portrait but actively suppress the color red or any red flowers. 3. Pro-Tips for Perfect Prompt Balance
To get the most out of your image and text weights, keep these three golden rules in mind:
Keep it Relative: Midjourney weights are mathematical ratios, not absolute values. A prompt written as cat::2 dog::1 will produce the exact same results as cat::4 dog::2. The AI cares about the proportion between the numbers, not the size of the numbers themselves.
Isolate Your Image URLs: When combining image weights with text weights, always put your image URLs at the very beginning of the prompt, followed by your text, followed by your multi-prompt weights, and finally your --iw parameter at the dead end.
Use Decimals for Fine-Tuning: Don’t limit yourself to whole numbers. Shifting a text weight from 1 to 1.2 or an image weight from --iw 1.0 to --iw 1.3 can be the subtle nudge required to fix a stubborn generation.
By treating image weights (--iw) and text weights (::) as dials on a mixing board, you transform Midjourney from an unpredictable slot machine into a precise digital paintbrush.
