Going Ghost: How to Get an Invisible “No Name” on Discord
Have you ever scrolled through a server member list and spotted someone who seemingly has no name at all? Their profile picture floats in the sidebar, completely blank next to their online status, leaving a clean, mysterious gap where their text should be.
If you try to achieve this by simply hitting the spacebar and clicking save, Discord will block you. The platform’s validation system requires at least one character to prevent completely empty profiles. However, you can bypass this limitation using a clever workaround: special Unicode characters. These unique code points look completely blank to the human eye but register as valid data to Discord’s servers.
📋 The Secret Sauce: The Invisible Characters
To go nameless, you need to copy a specific type of invisible character. The most stable character for Discord is the Hangul Filler (U+3164), an empty placeholder character used in Korean typography.
Highlight and copy the empty space inside the brackets below:

(Note: Make sure you only highlight the blank area inside the brackets, not the brackets themselves!)
If the character above does not work on your specific device, opinions are mixed on platforms like Reddit regarding alternatives, but you can also try dedicated generators like the Invisible Text Generator on InvisibleTextt or QuillBot’s Invisible Character Tool to fetch fresh blank strings.
💻 How to Change Your Name on Desktop (Mac & Windows)
Once you have the character copied to your clipboard, updating your profile takes under a minute. Method 1: Change Your Global Display Name This updates your name across all servers by default. Open Discord and log in.
Click the User Settings (gear icon) in the bottom-left corner.
Under the Profiles tab, find the Display Name field and click Edit. Delete your current name completely.
Paste the invisible character you copied (Ctrl + V on Windows or Cmd + V on Mac). Click Save Changes.
Method 2: Change Your Nickname for a Specific Server
If you only want to be anonymous in a single server, you can change your server-specific nickname. Open the specific Discord server.
Find your profile in the member list on the right side of the screen.
Right-click your name and select Edit Server Profile (or Change Nickname).
Clear out the nickname field, paste the invisible character, and click Save.
📱 How to Change Your Name on Mobile (iOS & Android)
The mobile workflow mirrors the desktop application closely. Launch the Discord App on your phone.
Tap your Profile Picture / You icon in the bottom-right corner. Select Edit Profile.
Tap your current text inside the Display Name field and clear it out.
Long-press the text field and select Paste to insert the blank character. Tap Save in the top right corner.
⚠️ Important Considerations & Rules
While rolling out a blank username is a fun cosmetic trick, keep a few technical and community guidelines in mind:
Usernames vs. Display Names: Discord’s architecture splits your profile into a unique Username (used for logging in and adding friends) and a Display Name (what everyone actually sees). This invisible trick applies perfectly to Display Names and Nicknames. Trying to use it on your primary alphanumeric account login username may trigger an error.
Server Rules: Some strict community servers use bots to monitor member lists or require scannable names so staff can tag you for moderation. If a server administrator complains that they cannot tag or mention your profile, they might ask you to change it back or manually assign you a visible nickname.
Accessibility: Keep in mind that completely blank names can interact poorly with screen readers used by visually impaired Discord community members.
